MPs Mwangi, Gakuya, and three others to be charged by DCI for anti-government protests in June.

Five individuals are to face charges for their alleged involvement in organizing, coordinating, and providing funding for the youth-led anti-government protests in June, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The investigative agency claims to have received intelligence reports connecting MPs Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi (Embakasi Central) and James Mwangi Gakuya (Embakasi North), among others, to meetings that occurred at Hotel Boulevard in the heart of Nairobi. The agency wrote a letter to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on September 26.

On July 31, 2024, the two parliamentarians were called in, and their remarks were recorded. They refused, nevertheless, to turn in their cell phones for forensic analysis, according to DCI.

Mwangi, Gakuya, George Theuri (Embakasi West), Martin Deric Ngunjiri Wambugu (Nyeri), and Pius G. Munene are the individuals that DCI wishes to charge with conspiring to commit a felony in violation of Penal Code section 393.

It also wants Mwangi to be prosecuted for money laundering in violation of sections 3, 4, and 7 of the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act, as well as for encouraging or encouraging others to commit crimes in violation of section 391 of the Penal Code.
