Palmer of Chelsea hits four to defeat Brighton and earn all three points for Arsenal.

On Saturday, Chelsea defeated Brighton 4-2 to climb up to third place in the Premier League. Cole Palmer scored four goals in the first 20 minutes of play.

Georginio Rutter scored the Seagulls’ first goal with a header early on, taking advantage of a series of mistakes made by Chelsea’s defense.

The Blues had fallen behind. Palmer, though, quickly assumed control and became the first player in the Premier League to score four goals in the first half.

The England international leveled the score by sweeping home Nicolas Jackson’s pass and then calmly sunk in the penalty kick.

Palmer curled a free kick into the top corner to cap off his third Chelsea hat-trick in style. Carlos Baleba reduced Brighton’s deficit by taking advantage of another error made by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

However, Palmer’s explosive first forty-five minutes came to an end when he blasted past Bart Verbruggen at his near post.

Palmer hit the post and had another attempt disallowed before the half, so he had even more opportunities.

There were no goals in the second half following an exciting first half. But Brighton’s first defeat under Fabian Hurzeler had already done the damage to the visitors.

Chelsea has made a strong start to the season under Enzo Maresca, taking 13 of a possible 15 points after falling to Manchester City on the first weekend of play. Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal the lead at the Emirates Stadium in the 20th minute with his first goal of the year.

The Brazilian winger finished low inside the far post after Jurrien Timber’s cross. At the end of the first half, Martinelli changed the playmaker, allowing Leandro Trossard to score Arsenal’s second goal.
