Doctors in Machakos county are threatening to go on strike because of failed promises from the government.

Patients in Machakos County might not be able to access medical services in public facilities from Wednesday next week as doctors and clinicians announce a strike.

Despite giving the county notice for two weeks, health workers have still not addressed important issues that they have been advocating for over the last two years.

The campaigners are calling for the proper redesign and promotion of specialists from all levels, as well as the implementation of a return to work policy and comprehensive medical coverage for health workers before transitioning to Social Health Authority (SHA)

Addressing the media at the Machakos level five hospital, Dr Charles Okumu said doctors are expected to perform tasks that meet their professional standards, the county government has failed to comply with their demands, “chairperson KMPDU Eastern region.”.

Those who use health services in Machakos County and other nearby counties were warned that they would not be attended to as their employer has refused to take care of their demands.

From midnight on Tuesday, Bonface Mitambo, the chair of the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers and National deputy Chair, announced that services will come to a stop as members are advised to put their tools down if the county does not meet their demands, including promotions, redisignation, and providing comprehensive medical cover.

Despite spending two years in the boardroom with no impact on their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), they have finally reached their limit, according to their statement.

Donald Mutiso, Secretary General of the Kenya Environmental Health and Public health Practitioners Union, argues that the union’s use of their own resources to tackle public health issues in communities is crucial for disease prevention at the village level, while also criticizing inadequate transportation systems in other counties.

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti urged the Public Service Board to proceed with the announcement.

Machakos Regional Minister Muya Ndambuki confirmed receipt of the doctors’ strike notice, saying they had joined the doctors and accused them of non-cooperation.

He asked for an end to the strike and to join the council..
