According to US media on Monday, Israel has promised the White House that it will not target nuclear or oil facilities in a planned retaliatory attack on Iran.
Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1 in retaliation for Israel’s killing of militant leaders in the region who were aligned with Tehran and a general in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, and Israel has vowed to launch a counterattack.
According to the Washington Post, which cited anonymous US officials, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured the White House that a counterattack it is considering would only target military targets. The Wall Street Journal reported that the commitment was made during a phone call between US President Joe Biden and Netanyahu last week, as well as during discussions between US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, in recent days, according to US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Following missile and drone strikes in April in retaliation for an Israeli-attributed airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, the attack was Iran’s second direct assault on Israel.
