D-Day for Gachagua in the Senate as the agenda for the hearing on the impeachment motion is confirmed

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is a man on the cross, and on Wednesday morning in the Senate, he will face his just desserts.

This comes after the Nairobi High Court on Tuesday rejected a request to prevent the Senate from considering the impeachment motion against the troubled DP.

A schedule issued by the Clerk states that the Senators must all be seated in the chambers by precisely 9 a.m. on Wednesday. They will also be attending a pre-hearing meeting, which is expected to last for approximately an hour.

Pre-trial hearing is the legal term for this meeting, which will take place in secret. The Senate’s mandate, the rules of procedure, and the agenda for the hearing will be recited by the senators at 10 a.m. during the preliminary phase.

The National Assembly’s legislators will also be introduced, along with any legal representation they may have, and lastly, the Deputy President and his legal representation.

The mover of the impeachment motion, Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Eckomas Mutuse, legislator Otiende Amollo of Rarieda, JLAC Chairperson George Murugara, legislator Peter Kaluma of Homa Bay Town, and his Kanduyi counterpart John Makali will represent the National Assembly.

Jeremiah Nyegenye, the Senate Clerk, will read the charges against the Deputy President between 10.30 and 11 a.m., after which he will be asked if he is guilty or not.

After that, each side will have 30 minutes to present their opening arguments. Following the opening remarks, the lengthy hearings begin with the National Assembly’s three-hour prosecution of Gachagua and the Deputy President’s two-hour cross-examination of his accusers.
