According to reports on Tuesday, Thomas Tuchel is in discussions with the Football Association to take over as manager of England going forward.
It comes after rumors that Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, who has an expiring contract at the end of the season, has been questioned about his interest in the position.
The 51-year-old Tuchel fired Chelsea’s manager after leading the team to Champions League victory in 2021.
After England’s July loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, which prompted Gareth Southgate to resign, he has been one of the bookies’ top picks to lead England.
The German, who departed Bayern Munich at the end of the previous campaign, was reportedly in “pole position” to succeed Southgate in the long run, according to Sky Sports. Regarding the reports, the Football Association chose not to comment.
In August, Lee Carsley was temporarily named Southgate’s replacement, first for the Nations League campaign spanning three international windows.
The 50-year-old, who left his position as manager of the under-21 team, has since sent conflicting signals about whether he wants the position long-term.
England has previously had two foreign managers in charge: Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
A 2-1 loss to Greece at home last week severely damaged Carsley’s chances of taking on the position on a full-time basis after he selected an experimental lineup. “We’ve observed in the past that the team has been coached by people of various nationalities.
The best applicant ought to be hired,” declared the acting manager.
