The impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been gazetted by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, formally removing the nation’s second in command from office.
Immediately following the Senate’s approval of the impeachment motion against Gachagua, the Gazette Notice dated October 17, 2024, was published last night.
The Senate voted to send Gachagua home on five of the eleven grounds, according to the notice from the Senate Speaker.
The Senate upheld the following five grounds for Gachagua’s impeachment:
The Constitution’s Articles 10 (2) (a), (b), and (c); 27 (4), 73 (1) (a) and (2) (b); 75 (1) (c); and 147 (1), as read in conjunction with Article 131 (2) (c) and (d), were flagrantly violated.
2. Flagrant disregard for the Constitution’s Article 160 (1) on Judges’ Institutional and Decisional Independence.
3. Flagrant disregard for the Constitution’s Articles 3 (1) and 148 (5) (a) regarding loyalty to the Oath of Office and Allegiance.
4. There are good grounds to suspect that H.E. the Deputy President has violated National Cohesion and Integration Act sections 13 (1) (a) and 62.
5. Serious misconduct that is incompatible with the honorable position and high calling of the Deputy President’s Office, as well as that of a member of the National Security Council and Cabinet. The work of the National Security Intelligence Service and its officers has been openly criticized and attacked by H.E. the Deputy President.
