UASU has announced a new strike

Following the announcement of an official strike by the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) that began today, learning in all public universities will be suspended from midnight. According to UASU, the strike will commence at midnight; all attempts to engage in dialogue with the government and achieve consensus have proven unsuccessful.

“I wish to inform all UASU members, irrespective of their location, that they are expected to work until midnight today, after which they should cease all work,” urged Constantine Wesonga, the Secretary General of UASU.

If a member is provided with a 7% share, it will be evident. We are not engaging with individuals who are unable to perform basic calculations such as 7% and 4%, therefore attempting to deceive them would be futile. “You desire the involvement of UASU officials in that manipulation; that is an action we are not willing to undertake,” he added.

The union revealed that it had been in discussions with the government to establish a return-to-work agreement. The final effort to attain a resolution was unsuccessful, occurring during a meeting held on September 26.

This occurred not with standing recent government efforts to persuade the dons to resume classes, offering to escalate the negotiations to a ministerial level.

September 25, the Cabinet Secretary for Labour, Alfred Mutua, disclosed his decision to broaden the negotiations by involving representatives from the Ministries of Labour and Education, as well as from the Treasury, in order to facilitate reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.CS Mutua has also pledged to enhance the retirement threshold for all academic personnel, comprising graduate assistants, tutorial fellows, and assistant lecturers.

During the meeting, attended by the UASU Secretary General, Dr. Wesonga” and Dr. KUSU Secretary General would be mentioned in the formal writing. Charles Mukhwaya, along with other members, we collectively reached an agreement on the establishment of an inter-ministerial negotiating team.

“This committee will address the key concerns raised by the unions and work toward a return-to-work agreement,” stated Mutua.

The strike which meant to start after the lapse of a seven-day notice provided by UASU and other staff unions to the government. They will then proceed to start their industrial action. The unions, such as the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), criticized the government for its perceived negligence, alleging a breach of promises to meet their demands. Learning at higher institutions will be disrupted by the upcoming strike, which follows shortly after a previous strike was halted following an agreement by staff unions to engage in negotiations with the government.
