Godfrey Otunge, the Head of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti, has confirmed the mission’s dedication to reinstating peace and security in response to the increased gang violence in the Caribbean nation.
The police chief highlighted during a press statement on Monday, November 11, that the peacekeepers will persist in their key duty of aiding in establishing a supportive atmosphere for the conduct of democratic elections in Haiti as directed by the United Nations.
Otunge appreciated the effort of the peacekeepers in bringing peace to the war-torn country. He mentioned that foreign officers would maintain collaboration with Haitian officers to carry out joint operations targeting gang activities and safeguarding vital government infrastructure.
As per the police commander, the spontaneous operations played a crucial role in securing various towns held by gangs and safeguarding the well-being of the nation’s residents.
Otunge also revealed that the mission was currently in the deployment phase and was gradually evolving into a fully operational endeavor with the support of extra security personnel from contributing nations.
In his recent update, the police commander praised the citizens of Haiti and conveyed his trust in their ongoing support and collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by gang-related threats, which have significantly impeded the country’s development.
The partnership between MSS and HNP plays a vital role in establishing the required stability for Haiti’s advancement and well-being. Nevertheless, Otunge expressed that the MSS and the HNP will persist in these efforts, backed by the unwavering support of the Haitian community.
He further expressed the MSS’s dedication to the people of Haiti and assured that they will persistently assist the HNP in their endeavors to reinstate law and order in the Republic.
The most recent update arrived just two days following the Haiti Presidential Council’s decision to remove Garry Conille as the nation’s Prime Minister. This decision came six months into his leadership of the nation facing challenges.
On Monday, November 11, an executive order was issued officially naming Alix Didier Fils Aime, aged 52, as the new Head of State, succeeding Garry Conille. Eight out of nine members of the presidential council signed the executive order.
Nevertheless, following his dismissal, Conille has raised objections to the decision that officially removed him from his position, expressing doubts about its legality. As stated by Conille, only the Parliament held the authority to remove him from his high-ranking position.
In June of this year, Garry Conille was named as Haiti’s Prime Minister by a nine-member presidential council that was established under the leadership of Conille’s predecessor, Ariel Henry, who stepped down in May 2024.
