In Kilifi County a fire incident occurred at the county offices.
On Tuesday, November 12, a fire occurred at Kilifi County offices, causing services to come to a halt.
Addressing the press, Omar Said, a Committee Member of the County Department for Water and Environment, mentioned that they were in the office holding a meeting when they suddenly heard people’s cries alerting them to a fire incident at the building’s extension.
“Omar mentioned that during a meeting at one of our KIMAWASCO offices, a fire broke out, engulfing the building. “
“We promptly notified the fire department, and we appreciate their swift response, despite not yet knowing the cause of the fire,” he further mentioned.
Eyewitnesses who shared their accounts with the media pointed fingers at the county government, highlighting its history of overlooking crucial safety protocols.
They also stated that for a period, the county government was burning garbage in the town center without considering the potential risks involved.
The residents expressed additional concerns, noting that the county officials had previously confronted them about burning trash. They wondered what had changed when it was discovered that the outbreak was linked to improper waste disposal in the area.
Initially, if you were caught burning garbage in the vicinity of the town, enforcement officers would promptly address the situation. Currently, we are questioning how a major department such as this could engage in the practice of burning tires to the extent that it leads to a fire,” conveyed one resident to the media.
The residents shared their belief that the fire could have potentially started from burning tires, a claim that the county had not addressed yet.
Nevertheless, Omar Said, a Member of the County Department for Water and Environment Committee (CECM), disclosed that the exact cause of the fire had not been identified yet, despite the accusations.
He mentioned that the County chose to conduct investigations into the incident and also shared that his office was nearly destroyed by the fire.
