Wembanyama scores 50 points in the Spurs’ victory over the Wizards

Victor  Wembanyama became the fourth-youngest player to score 50 points in an NBA game, after leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 139-130 victory over the Washington Wizards.

In just 26 minutes, the Spurs center, whose previous high score was 40, reached his 50-point mark. He also made eight three-pointers, which was another career high.

Wembanyama, the first overall pick in the previous year’s draft, stated, “I’d love to tell you that you wake up a certain way or that you feel really smooth during warm-ups, but at the end of the day, in NBA games we got one game every other day.”

“There is pain, perspiration and bleeding on the court every time we struggle to warm up, so it’s really a minute-to-minute thing, which adds up to 48 minutes every game.”

The Spurs triumphed once more without head coach Gregg Popovich, after announcing on Wednesday that the 75-year-old had a mild stroke earlier this month but was expected to fully recover.

The Spurs ended the third quarter with a 23-6 run, putting them ahead 108-91, and even though the Wizards narrowly cut the lead to five points late in the game, they ran out of time. The game was tied at the half (67-67).
