India imposed Meta 3 billion Kshs for sharing WhatsApp data.

On Monday, the U.S.-based company and a well-known tech company were fined about $25.4 million equivalent to 3 billion Kshs, for antitrust violations linked to WhatsApp messaging application policy privacy in 2021. India’s CCI regulator has instructed WhatsApp to abstain from sharing user data or use it for advertising purposes with any other companies linked to it for 5 years.

According to CCI, WhatsApp service providers in India are strictly not required to do any other thing with the collected data. An investigation was carried out In March of 2021 by the (CCI) which looked into the privacy policy for WhatsApp, Facebook, and its affiliates which brought an uproar globally. 

The Corporate Affairs Ministry established a report in February, and the government is reviewing it, The Competition Digital Bill does enhance regulations on the current antitrust.  Meta has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment.
Re-known tech giants like Apple, Google, and Meta are confronting fresh regulatory hurdles due to India’s proposed antitrust law resembling that of the European Union.
