Discreet transfer of Besigye from Nairobi to Uganda
Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye was reportedly driven from Nairobi to Uganda in a car, his wife says, after he was reportedly arrested in Nairobi.
Giving a telling insight into the recent incident that has grabbed national attention, Winnie Byanyima, wife of Besigye, told the media that her husband was reportedly kidnapped by Ugandan security agents and driven back to Uganda by road—something that could take over 13 hours.
Speaking after visiting the husband at Luzira Prison in Southeastern Kampala, Byanyima revealed that Besigye and his co-accused, Obed Kamulegeya Lutale, were squeezed into a tiny car after their arrest.
Speaking to Reuters in an interview published on Monday, November 25, Byanyima said she learned more when she visited Besigye in prison after he was detained.
She stated that her husband wasn’t tortured but faced continuous pressure.
She continued by recounting how they placed him, Besigye, and Obed in a compact car where they all had to sit close together. Upon reaching Kampala, he mentioned that he was having difficulty walking.
The additional information was directed toward the flaws of the country’s intelligence services despite their denial of involvement in the detention of President Yoweri Museveni’s long-time opponent.
It is believed that on the day of his arrest, Besigye left his hotel room in a taxi towards Riverside Drive to meet with a friend, Obed. The taxi driver, who waited for Besigye, never saw him again or heard from him.
Byanyima revealed that immediately after the arrest, Besigye was forcefully seized, tied, and thrown into a car with his political associate, Obed Kamulegeya Lutale. The kidnappers went ahead to sit on top of the persons until they reached their destination in Kampala.
She said the abductors first masqueraded as Kenyans speaking in Swahili before attacking the opposition leader and kidnapping him. During her visit, Besigye revealed that he had even heard his abductors speaking in a Ugandan language, claims that have sharply been denied by the Ugandan government.
Byanyima said the charges against Besigye are politically motivated and come as a result of a political witch hunt. Besigye, a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni, has tried to contest him in four elections but has failed to unseat him.
She said the matter is beyond Kizza Besigye, and that it is about creating an enabling environment for the opposition to play its role in a constitutional democracy. Yesterday, Uganda’s Minister of ICT and National Guidance Chris Baryomunsi insinuated that the Kenyan government was party to the arrest of Besigye.
The news came when NARC Kenya Party leader Martha Karua last week unveiled her involvement in Besigye’s 50-member legal team for his coming trial in a military court on December 2.
