The Shujaa national sevens team has arrived safely in Dubai in advance of the 2024–2025 series’ opening leg this weekend.
Following their relegation a year ago, Shujaa will be returning to the World Series, and according to Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chairman Sasha Mutai, they aim to place in the top eight.
“The team has arrived in Dubai safely for the start of the series. Ahead of their return, they are feeling upbeat, driven, and prepared to perform well with the goal of placing in the top eight,” Mutai said.
South Africa, France, and Australia are included in the same pool as Kenya, which Mutai thinks will suit the team well when they return.
“We are playing against the best 11 in the world, in a very tough season where teams have been reduced to 12 and we are confident the players will make Kenyans and all the Shujaa fans proud,” Mutai continued.
A sponsorship deal worth over KSh. 100 million, which also includes the women’s team Lionesses, was announced by Safaricom on Monday, giving the team a significant boost.
“The players’ technical bench is greatly boosted in morale, and the union no longer has an excuse for failing to deliver. We have been extremely pleased with the sponsors’ support thus far.”
