Wilfred Mutubwa a lawyer, tragically passed away

The Judiciary of Kenya mourns the death of Wilfred Mutubwa, the late Vice Chairperson of the Political Disputes Tribunal. He died in tragic circumstances during a brief break from a virtual court session in Nairobi on Tuesday evening.

The family was left with a heavy heart as the cause of the lawyer’s death remained unclear.

At the time of his death, Mutubwa was serving as the Dean of the School of Law at Mt Kenya University.

On Wednesday morning, Chief Justice Martha Koome paid glowing tribute to the late legal scholar, describing him as an outstanding proponent of an alternative approach to the delivery of justice in Kenya.

I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Judiciary family and myself to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Koome mentioned that before becoming Chairman of the PPDTRc, Wilfred Mutubwa held the role of Vice-Chairperson at the PPDT and was also a member of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce of the Judiciary.

Dr. Mutubwa was respected and regarded as the Chairman Emeritus of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators-Kenya Branch for his active and ardent support in the adoption of the multi-door approach to justice in Kenya. She said his commitment to arbitration and mediation practices has greatly impacted their adoption in the field of law.

He also shone as an eloquent evangelist for Alternative Dispute Resolution, having served at a later stage as Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators – Kenya.
Those close to him told the media that Mutubwa had also been a member during the ongoing strike at a Nairobi city hospital and was spending all his time trying to find peaceful closure for the institution.

Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo gracefully saluted a renowned law expert, touting him as one of the most accomplished legal practitioners, a respected academic, and a strong advocate for Alternative Dispute Resolution, together with other legal brains.

Odhiambo noted that Mutubwa’s brilliant contributions to ADR added to his appointment as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague. He commended Mutubwa for being a pioneer in initiatives that have moved the role of Arbitration within Kenya’s legal framework.

She added that his remarkable achievements during his short yet influential tenure as the dean at MKU School Of Law truly reflect his wholehearted dedication to mentoring and advancing the field of law.

Mutubwa’s body was later taken by the authorities and transferred to the mortuary for further examination, and investigations together with subsequent autopsy procedures were initiated to determine the cause of his death.
