23 policemen injured as student riot in Bungoma

According to a police report, the protests started on Tuesday when the police were deployed to quell the disturbance.

However, the students pushed back and regrouped, engaging Boda boda guys and other university staff in the process..

However, the officers did not allow the protesters to enter, instead resorting to stone pelting and using weapons to confront the protesters.

Distraught officers called for help from nearby stations, but the soldiers were unable to stop the protesters.

“They shouted that the police were out of ammunition and had run out of tear gas, so they could run away from the officers and carry out their mission,” reports said.

During the confrontation, the students took a gun from Officer James Odera, but the officers responded by firing into the crowd and were able to retrieve the gun..

The fight ended when the officers shot the female student Salome Ayela Wekesa, 26, in her second year of study.

Wekesa’s body was taken to Bungoma County Referral Hospital awaiting post-mortem. According to this report, three officers fired into the crowd.

Part of the report: “The situation is still being monitored.”.
