6 Nairobi roads to close on Sunday for Standard Chartered Marathon
Marathon organizers announced on Wednesday that there will be traffic problems during Sunday’s event on October 27, where thousands of participants are expected to avail themselves and compete for prizes.
The race will start at Uhuru Gardens off Langata Road, and the lanes will be closed from 11.59pm on 26 October to 1.30pm on Sunday 27 October.

At least six other roads will be temporarily closed, including sections of Ngong Road, Mombasa Road, Likoni Road, Lenana Road and Waiyaki Way, with the Southern Bypass mostly affected by the marathon. .
The 15km stretch from Karen Mall to Kikuyu Town via the Southern Bypass will be impassable for some time and motorists have been asked to use Dagoretti road alternatively..
Vehicles wishing to travel from Mombasa Road to Karen Mall via the Southern Bypass should use the Langata Road.
The Southern Bypass that connects people from Galleria Mall to Kikuyu will also be closed for the marathon, motorists are asked to use Dagoretti via Langata Road.
In addition, access to Mombasa Road from the Galleria Mall from the south will be impassable for most of Sunday morning. Local organizing committee leader Peter Gitau assured the participants on Wednesday that the race will be held without any problems.
“The start and finish times are carefully planned for the perfect race. It will be recognized as a world class marathon,” he said.
There are many cash prizes up for grabs and the winner of the 42 km race will receive KSh 2 million in both the men’s and women’s categories. A pool of KSh 12.9 million has been earmarked for the winners, with a minimum cash prize of KSh 20,000 going to tenth place.

Despite the high payout received by sponsors, this year’s marathon will be one to remember with a bang: Ksh 173 million which was set up for this edition. In addition to cash, sponsorships were also provided in the form of in-kind donations and aimed to improve the racing experience.
After registration closed on October 10, 25,000 fans registered for the event, reaching the initial goal of 20,000 participants. It should be noted that the 5 km, 10 km and 21 km races are the most popular among racers.
