Amnesty reports migrant workers victimized in Carrefour stores Saudi Arabia.

Despite an internal investigation not definitively confirming most of the allegations, Carrefour stated to AFP that it was planning an external investigation.

Amnesty International said it found that migrant workers at Carrefour in Saudi Arabia were cheated, forced to work long hours, denied vacation days, defrauded of their earnings and forced to living in empty houses..

“What looked like a bright future turned out to be something else. The workers thought they were opening doors to a better life, but many faced brutality and abuse,” said Marta Schaaf, Director of Amnesty International’s Accountability Program.

“Carrefour’s failure to act could not prevent this suffering, for some contract workers are forced to do forced labor, including human trafficking,” She noted.

Amnesty International reports based on interviews with 17 people from India, Nepal and Pakistan to work in Carrefour stores in Saudi Arabia, Amnesty International said Carrefour has a responsibility to ensure that abuses do not occur throughout its businesses, including corporations, and called on it and MAF to address the issue and ” Carrefour stated it had a discussion with Amnesty International about working conditions in Saudi Arabia earlier this year and asked MAF to investigate the matter..

Amnesty International emphasized the importance of Carrefour taking action to prevent mistreatment across its businesses, including companies. The organization has also called on both it and MAF to take action against the problem..

The Ministry also said it is working with the governments of host countries for migrant workers to fight unfair labor practices.

This statement does not specifically mention Amnesty International’s allegations against Carrefour.

Based in Dubai, MAF operates nearly 500 Carrefour stores in 30 countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, with Saudi Arabia its second largest market after the United Arab Emirates.

The company earned $735 million in net income last year on $9.4 billion in revenue..
