At a crowded Kamala Harris campaign rally on Tuesday, former US President Barack Obama unleashed his inner MC by rapping the lyrics to Eminem’s classic song “Lose Yourself.”
The Grammy-winning musician, who is also a Detroit legend, introduced the 68-year-old former president to the stand at the rally in Detroit. Obama quoted the song’s lyrics to start his speech after the introduction.
Obama remarked, “I must admit that I have performed at many rallies, so I don’t typically get anxious.” However, I felt as though I was following Eminem. My arms are heavy, my knees are weak, my palms are sweating, and I’ve already puked on my sweater and Mom’s spaghetti.
“I’m nervous but on the surface I look calm and ready, to drop bombs but I keep on forgetting,” he said, quoting a few more lines from the song before chanting a portion of the melody as the audience erupted.
Obama remarked, “I assumed Eminem would be performing.” “I was going to leap out… “I adore Eminem.” In his rally introduction, Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) also used the occasion to express his support for Harris and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, claiming that Michigan and the city of Detroit were significant to him and in the public eye as the election approached in two weeks.
“It’s crucial to speak up,” he stated. “Please, I’m urging everyone to cast their ballots. Nobody, in my opinion, wants to live in America where people are afraid of reprisals or what will happen if they voice their opinions.
“I believe that Vice President Harris is in favor of a future for this nation in which these liberties, along with numerous others, will be safeguarded and maintained.” Since Eminem has been outspoken about his hatred for former President and current Republican nominee Donald Trump, it was a calculated move to have him attend the rally.
Slim Shady called Trump a “bi**h” during his five-minute freestyle at the 2017 BET Awards. He also criticized Trump for his remarks at a White Nationalist rally and his position on NFL players who were protesting the playing of the national anthem. He rapped, “That’s an awfully hot coffee pot/ Should I drop it on Donald Trump?” in his song “Framed,” which was released that same year. Most likely not, but until I develop a strong plot, that’s all I have.
In his song “The Ringer,” released a year later, he implied that the Secret Service visited him because of his alleged threats against Trump. He spat, “Because Agent Orange dispatched the Secret Service to meet with me in person to see if I truly consider hurting him.”
