“Disco Matanga” banned in Uganda over sexual abuse

Public Works Minister Justin Kasule Lumumba issued a ban on the events, the Swahili name for “funeral disco”, on Monday.

This follows numerous reports of drug and alcohol abuse, girls being seduced and men being harassed at parties.

“Disco Matanga is a demonic dance. According to AFP, Lumumba said: “We have stopped it, those who hold it will face the force of the law”. dress and seductive dance to attract men to pay for the funerals, these things are done at night when the girls are molested.”

“Disco Matanga” originates from funeral traditions in the Luo and Luhya communities of western Kenya.

The tradition spread to Uganda, especially in the eastern areas where there were cultural exchanges with Kenyan communities.

As the meetings grew, local communities, religious leaders and government officials expressed concern over drug and alcohol use, and such as inappropriate behavior and violent anger.

Alarms are often the subject of sexual harassment, with concerns about encouraging children to engage in inappropriate activities, including early exposure to sexual activity. and drug use. Kenya also suppressed Matanga Disco in 2018 over the same concerns.

More than 17,000 teenage pregnancies were reported on the Kilifi coast and then state secretary Fred Matian’gi banned it.

However, in 2022, Aisha Jumwa, Secretary for Public Services and Gender, lifted the ban..
