The Senate verdict comes at finalize the second day of the second impeachment trial of vice president Gachagua.
The National Assembly held a popular vote last week to impeach Gachagua on 11 charges, which included corruption, violence, subversion government, and divisive politics.
The trial began in the Senate on Wednesday after the 59-year-old, famously known as “Reggie G”, failed in several court actions to stop the entire action.
Gachagua denied all charges against him- and no criminal case has been opened yet – but he will be automatically removed from his office if the Senate confirms his impeachment.
If that takes place, he will be the first vice president to be removed since impeachment was introduced in Kenya’s new constitution in 2010. After parliamentary proceedings ended in the courts.
– “baseless allegations” –
Among the names of the successors put forward by the Kenyan media are the Minister of Home Affairs Kithure Kindiki, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi and one local governor, Ann Waiguru.
If the opposition members of the 67-seat Senate support the ruling party, Gachagua’s chances of survival are slim..
Unlike in the House of Commons where representatives vote on the entire bill, senators need to support only one charge, with a two-thirds majority, for the trial to be successful. 282 members of the 349-member parliament voted overwhelmingly against Gachagua, more than the two-thirds required.
He is a powerful businessman from Kenya’s largest ethnic group, the Kikuyu, Gachagua overcame past corruption to become Ruto’s vice president in the hotly contested 2022 election
But in recent weeks he has complained about being sidelined by the president, and has been accused of supporting youth-led anti-government protests that began widely in June..
Political conflicts have arisen due to the occurrence of lethal demonstrations over unpopular tax increases, with differences evident at all levels. At a press conference ahead of last week’s election, Gachagua vehemently denied what he called a “baseless allegation” and said attempts to oust him did not take into account the will of the people who voted him in 2022.
“Now I’ve been found. cartridge.” This is what we call political fraud, deception and fraud.”
Gachagua addressed churches in his stronghold in central Kenya on Sunday, but urged his supporters to keep calm..
“Preach and keep peace no matter the end. Kenya is our country to keep,” he said.
His attorneys argued that the countermeasures were justified and reckless. But in the latest of many decisions, the Supreme Court decided on Wednesday to stop the whole process, clearing the way for the Senate.
Ruto did not comment publicly on the impeachment case, but Gachagua said it could not be carried out without the consent of the leader. (Boss)
