Chaos broke out in a funeral attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Ngarariga, Limuru, Kiambu County on Thursday, November 28.
The incident happened when rowdy youth allegedly began to shake a tent where the former Deputy President was seated alongside his closest political allies, among them Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa.
Gachagua and other politicians were seen seated in one of the tents allocated for distinguished members of the congregation.
Minutes before the former DP was to address the audience, a group of unarmed natives began shaking the tent, prompting those inside to rush out in a state of panic.
The members ran for safety as the rival factions engaged in serious fights that left property of unknown value destroyed.
In the process, Gachagua’s vehicle was among those destroyed, as shown in a video capturing the moment a black Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the former Deputy President was left with a destroyed rear window.
According to witnesses, several people sustained critical injuries, as captured in the images that showed plastic chairs scattered all over the ground during the scuffle.
The scuffle occurred as Gachagua was caught up in a publicized falling-out with his former boss, President William Ruto. In his recent speech, the deputy president seemed to contradict Ruto’s style of governance.
Speaking at a church service held at the AIPCA, Gachagua let out his frustration against the Head of State for not listening to his advice on how to handle the Adani Group transactions. The former Deputy President cautioned Ruto against the deal but the president chose not to listen to him.
In ensuring the level of impunity in the country is high, Gachagua added that he was perceived to be an enemy of the people whenever he tried advising the president on some government matters.
I told the president that the Adani deal was full of problems and that it was unpopular among the people, and he despised me for that. Gachagua said it was framed to look as though he was opposed to government projects.
He said that anytime Cabinet Secretaries differed, they would ask him to tell the President, adding that nobody had ever been given the mandate of telling the president that what he did was wrong.
