Iraq hosts a funeral service for Iranian general killed alongside Hezbollah chief.
An AFP photographer witnessed the start of the funeral procession in Iraq on Monday for Iranian Revolutionary Guard General Abbas Nilforoushan, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike alongside Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah.
Alongside Nasrallah, Nilforoushan, a senior commander in the Quds Force foreign operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was also killed on September 27 during the attack on south Beirut.
Nilforoushan’s body was found at the strike site on the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, a Hezbollah stronghold, the Guard Corps said on Friday.
His remains were transported from Beirut to Karbala, a Shia Muslim holy city in central Iraq.
It was then brought to Imam Husayn’s shrine, where a representative of Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the leading Shia cleric in Iraq, led funeral prayers in front of a sizable crowd.
In addition to waving the Iranian, Hezbollah, and Iraqi Shia Kataib Hezbollah flags, mourners chanted “death to Israel.”
After visiting the neighboring shrine of Al-Abbas, the funeral cortege proceeded to Najaf, another Shia holy city.
The Revolutionary Guard Corps-affiliated Sepah news agency said that Nilforoushan’s body would be sent to Mashhad, the holy city of Iran.
Nilforoushan will be buried in his hometown of Isfahan in central Iran after another funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday in Tehran’s Imam Hossein Square, according to Sepah.
Iran retaliated against Israel on October 1 with about 200 missiles after Nasrallah, Nilforoushan, and Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, were killed in late July.
Israel claimed responsibility for the Beirut strike but made no mention of Haniyeh’s passing in Tehran, where he had been present at the new president of the Islamic republic’s inauguration.
