Israel’s military confirms that Hamas leader Sinwar has been killed.

Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, was killed by Israeli forces in southern Gaza the day before, the military said on Thursday.

According to a statement released by the Israeli military, “IDF (military) soldiers from the Southern Command eliminated Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Hamas terrorist organization, yesterday (Wednesday), October 16, 2024, after a year-long pursuit.” The operation took place in the southern Gaza Strip.

“Yahya Sinwar was pursued by the forces and ultimately eliminated as a result of the dozens of operations conducted by the IDF and the ISA (Shin Bet internal security agency) over the last year and in recent weeks in the area where he was eliminated,” the military continued.

Three terrorists were found and killed by IDF soldiers from the 828th Brigade (Bislach), who were stationed in the region. It’s evident that Yahya Sinwar was removed once the body identification procedure was finished.

Along with Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, Israel accuses Sinwar, 61, of being the mastermind of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that started the current conflict. Although the Palestinian organization has not verified it, the Israeli military claims that Deif perished in an attack earlier this year.

Ismail Haniyeh, the former leader of Hamas, was killed in Iran on July 31 and was replaced by Sinwar in August. On Haniyeh’s passing, Israel has remained silent.

1,206 people died on Israeli soil as a result of the Hamas attack last year, the majority of them were civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli figures that also included hostages who were killed in custody.
