Junior Starlets are full of confidence following their historic U-17 World Cup victory.

In the Dominican Republic’s Santo Domingo Head coach Mildred Cheche thinks the historic victory over Mexico has strengthened the Junior Starlets’ mental toughness, even though they were eliminated from the current Under-17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic. The Junior Starlets became the first Kenyan team to win a World Cup match Thursday morning when they defeated Mexico 2-1 in their final Group C match.

“It will have a huge impact for me and my younger players because we were the first team from Kenya to qualify for the World Cup, and now we are the first to win,” Cheche said.

The victory has altered the Junior Starlets’ mindset, according to Valarie Nekesa, who scored Kenya’s first goal and opening goal on a global platform.

“Yes, I did score, as I had hoped. For the team and me, the victory was a memorable moment; at least we accomplished something.

Butere Girls High School student Lorna Faith Wasike, who scored the game-winning goal and was named the Most Valuable Player, says the goal will always be remembered.

“The recognition is historic, so it will always add something to me whenever I see it,” she said. Mexico’s head coach, Monica Vargara, praised Kenya for the victory but pledged to improve in the next tournaments.

“Kenya outclassed us in strength and speed, and my young team will be more organized for the upcoming championship.”
