Meg Whitman steps down as US Ambassador

Meg Whitman, the United States Ambassador to Kenya, gracefully resigned from her  position on Wednesday, November 13, following the election of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States.

Whitman gracefully shared upon her departure that she had already tendered her resignation letter to President Joe Biden.

Meg Whitman gracefully described her position as the US ambassador as a special  honor and privilege, noting that during her tenure, the United States successfully enhanced its partnership with Kenya.

Part of Whitman’s statement highlighted the US government’s  commitment to supporting Kenya by providing emergency funding for flood relief in 2023 and continuing efforts to combat diseases like malaria, HIV, and MPOX, showcasing a dedication to the health and well-being of our Kenyan friends.

The US ambassador to Kenya also mentioned some remarkable accomplishments, such as the elevation of Kenya as the first major non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa by the administration of Joe Biden.

Whitman emphasized that the accomplishments highlighted the significance of both  nations supporting each other and safeguarding their mutual democratic values and heightened security.

Trade, job opportunities, and investments from the US in Kenya have  reached unprecedented levels due to our diligent efforts. Whitman mentioned that we have also addressed the rapidly increasing need for our consular services, managing to decrease the waiting period for nonimmigrant visa appointments from over two years to approximately two months.

Meg Whitman highlighted the importance of her accomplishments in Kenya, mentioning that she had served in the country at the behest of President Joe Biden.

The US ambassador praised President Donald Trump and expressed optimism about the  ongoing cooperation between the US and Kenya.

“Our Embassy is supported by skilled employees from Kenya and the United States who, under the guidance of Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard, will further  the common objectives that our longstanding bilateral relationship is built upon,” stated Whitman.

Our relationship is currently at its strongest point, and I am optimistic that this positive  trend will persist. I will leave Kenya with a heart full of gratitude for the dedicated team that has tirelessly supported me and the privilege to serve my country.

Her resignation follows recent criticisms by Kenyans who have called for Trump’s administration to recall her. Some of her critics disapproved of her for supporting the government and remaining silent on issues like forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
