On Thursday, the Ministry of Labor launched a partnership with China’s Ministry Of Human Resources and the International Labor Organization (ILO) to establish enabling conditions for workers in the informal sector. The Secretary to State (CS) Alfred Mutua, in an official statement issued by Kenya’s Ministry of Labour, emphasized the need for equal pay and benefits for all employees across the country.
“During the launch of the joint project between Kenya, China and the International Labor Organization (ILO), I commended the efforts of our government to ensure equal rights and benefits for all workers , regardless of their category,” Mutua said.
“The informal sector is the backbone of Kenya’s economy and employs a large proportion of our workforce. However, due to limited social protection mechanisms, many informal workers are trapped in change in poverty, vulnerability and social exclusion. “.Our goal, as per the CS, is to change this narrative by developing a comprehensive framework that extends social protection to informal workers and uses digital transformation to bring more people under the safety net. Important steps are taken to ensure better data collection for the most vulnerable, including Kenyan workers in the informal sector.
He added: “The time has come to recognize the contribution of informal sector workers by giving them the security and protection they deserve.
Many representatives from the labor industry, such as Li Zhong Xiang, Joseph Motari and David Koros of PSF, ILO Director Caroline Khamati Mugala, COTU’s CEO Mark Hurley, and FKE’S chief Economist, attended the launch.
