President Ruto appoints Kithure Kindiki

This announcement was made on Friday morning by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, on the sidelines of the National Assembly.

“It is my pleasure to inform the House that I have been informed by the President this morning, as per Standing Order 42(1), about the nomination of Kithure Kindiki for the Parliament’s vacant position. Office of the Vice President of Kenya after the removal of the previous leader.”

Professor Kindiki, who currently serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Home Affairs and National Administration, needs the approval of the National Council before taking over the position of Vice President. The assembly must vote on the nomination within 60 days of receiving the name.

After confirmation, the candidate is appointed by the President as his successor. Although the constitution does not confirm the time frame for this position, it is expected to happen immediately after the approval of the parliament.

Born 52 years ago in Irunduni village, Tharaka Nithi County, Kindiki attended Irunduni Primary School and Lenana School before obtaining a law degree from the University of Nairobi. He later obtained a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Pretoria. After returning to university, he taught law at the Universities of Moi and Nairobi and occasionally served as a visiting professor abroad.

Kindiki joined public service in 2008 when after he was appointed Secretary of the Administration for National Integration and Reconstruction by the late President Mwai Kibaki. After three months he resigned, citing lack of political will to settle the victims of post-election violence in 2007.

He rose to national prominence where Ruto appointed him to his legal team in the trial of the International Criminal Court (ICC). crimes against humanity. Kindiki joined politics and successfully contested for the Tharaka Nithi Senate seat in 2013 under the TNA.

During his first attempt, Kindiki served two terms, where he rose to deputy speaker in his second term. However, as tensions rose between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Vice President Ruto, Kindiki faced difficulties in the Senate and was eventually released..

Since then he has served as the Secretary for Home Affairs and National Administration in President Ruto’s first reshuffled  cabinet.

Unfortunately the Senate voted to impeach Vice President Rigathi Gachagua after a two-day trial with numerous evidence and hours of questioning.

Gachagua was removed after the authorization of five senators of the eleven states sent for trial, including violation of the constitution..
