The 21 victims of the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire who perished from burns will be remembered at a memorial service today at Nyeri County’s Mwega Stadium.
On Thursday, the funeral procession departed Naromoru Morgue at six in the morning and arrived at the location as mourners began to pour in.
Among the other expected attendees are Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba for Education.
Nine children are reportedly scheduled for burial today, ten on Friday, and two on Saturday. The graves of three of the victims will be located in Nakuru, Ndaragwa, and Laikipia.
Nineteen bodies were found in the burned-out dormitory after the fatal fire, and two young patients passed away in the hospital.
Their remains were later positively identified by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor and his examination team using a DNA matching profile.
After that, a multi-agency team was established to get in touch with the parents of the deceased students and set up a time for them to see the remains.
The government has given Ksh 100,000 to cover emergencies while the children are being laid to rest.
As soon as the administration complies with the Ministry of Education’s guidelines regarding school infrastructure, the school is scheduled to reopen.
