Recruitment crisis: TSC struggles to fill science teacher

The Teaching Commission on Wednesday 23 October confirmed that they’ve received 314,117 applications for the 46,000 posts advertised for (Junior) secondary school teachers (JSS). Application period ended on October 8.

In her address to the Education Committee of the National Assembly, Nancy Macharia, TSC’s chief executive, acknowledged that there was a shortage of JSC teachers in the section due to high numbers of applications. But even though the TSC portal has been flooded with applications, the Principal confirmed that the commission is concerned about the shortage of science teachers.

Macharia assured that the commission is currently looking at how to resolve the issue and resolve the problem.

At the parliamentary session, MPs expressed concern about the problem and asked TSC officials what their final strategy was as it was clear that there was a huge need for teaching jobs, but they could not get science teacher recruitment commission.

TSC officers led by Macharia, while giving their responses on the floor of the house, said most teachers prefer to learn on the job art, not science, and that’s why it’s a problem.

Yes, I admit, it was a problem, yes, I did not escape. And I think for the country it’s something we need to discuss,” said Dr. Nancy Macharia while sitting on the committee. It’s balanced and looking to recruit 20,000 more teachers for the next batch next month. of January 2025.

The commission has written to the Ministry of Education several times to use a multi-pronged approach to address the shortage of science teachers, but the problem has not been resolved accomplished,

Macharia said many students were encouraged to pursue science, which is an industry overrun by arts teachers..

“Most of the teachers that come out of our universities are arts, we don’t get science teachers when we announce the vacancies. But we have to admit that we have few science teachers, we have written many times to the Ministry of Education, and we haven’t had a science teacher yet.” Macharia told the committee. If you advertise about science and physics teachers, you won’t find them.

The Superintendent also said there are more than 400,000 unemployed teachers in the country, and government cuts have included this situation.

Macharia said at the meeting with MPs: “We approach you and we always ask for Ksh 2 billion but you still give us Ksh 1 billion, what should we do?”.
