Ruth Kamande; Inmate has now graduated with a law degree.

Nothing can limit a determined person

Ruth Kamande, who is serving life imprisonment at the Lang’ata Women’s Prison for stabbing her boyfriend 25 times to death, was among the group of prisoners and wardens who graduated with a law degree on Wednesday, November 26.

A beaming Kamande said during her certificate conferment, “I am indeed grateful and have to thank the Kenya Prison Service and the University of London together with the Justice Defenders, for this very important work in trying to make prison inmates become useful members of society through education.

We have assembled to celebrate this new beginning, a new story of which each of you has helped to write differently. “We are here to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating students,” Kamande said in her speech.

We come together not only to honor graduates from the University of London but also to celebrate the very achievements of those who have received their law degrees while incarcerated. Graduands who have undergone remarkable transformation, rehabilitation, and reformation-graduates whose narratives have been personally reshaped by you.

She also acknowledged one of the beneficiaries of the program, Hamisi Nari, who studied law while in prison and is currently practicing at the High Court of Kenya.

Before the commencement, she had told Justice Defenders that her desire to study law was influenced by the advice of former Attorney General Githu Muigai.

The graduands were clearly touched by the entry of Professor Githu Muigai into the room. I actually desired to be like him,”

Looking at her desire to find an able lawyer resembling her ideal, Kamande said she quickly grabbed on to study law the very moment a chance came along.

I had heard of Justice Defenders’ opportunity to use education to empower, and so I took that opportunity. I knew very well the many challenges that came hand in hand with serving on death row, but I also made a conscious decision to embrace the opportunity. My motivation was to hopefully one day be in a position to reach out to another individual and have a similar positive impact as Professor Githu Muigai had made upon my life.

Githu Muigai currently serves as the lead attorney for her latest appeal heard at the Supreme Court.

Since the terrible incident in 2015, Kamande has been continuously in the headlines for her linkage with the murder, not to mention how attractive she seems.

She contested Miss Lang’ata Women’s Prison in the year of 2016 and was voted as the winner. News as well as clippings about the performance of the convict inside the contest led her continuously to the center stage, and now her charisma is all over the newscasting.

While in her trial, Kamande said she acted in self-defence when she committed the murder after a domestic altercation with her boyfriend at his residence in Buruburu.

Initially sentenced to death, her sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by President William Ruto in July 2023.

Kamande was granted a chance to appeal her sentence at the Supreme Court during her latest request in October 2023. It came after the Appellate Court rejected it.
