Standard Media Group Employees are Seeking Govt Intervention

Eight months down the line we haven’t received our pay. It’s totally beyond us, cries out the current and former employees at the Standard media Group. On Thursday 14 November, the staff called on the government to intervene since the company has turned a deaf ear to them. Airing their grievances, they revealed that the company has been going through a financial crisis for the last two years.

                      How Did We get here?

It’s evident that many questions are lingering in the minds of  the once faithful employees of Standard Media Group. Some of the staff who were dismissed earlier revealed in a statement that the company has greatly been affected by the current crisis facing the reputable media house. Through their campaigns, they claimed that none of the agreed upon partial payments have been honored, thus making them go through tough financial untold situations. The government remains our last hope, they said.

This comes as a shocker to many since this is on of the leading Media houses in Kenya. They have been in operation for the last 34 years and so one would assume that they had been well equipped for a long race in the media journey. In July this year 2024, the company declared layoffs which lead to the company giving promises of a one year dismissal payment plan to it’s employees which hasn’t been met. All they can recount for, was a one month payment which was done way back in May.

It’s clearly becoming a nightmare to meet our daily needs like meals and school fees for our children, just to name but a few. As it dawns vividly in our minds that our beloved media house is going down and unable to maintain it’s status, the question remains. “What can be done to bring back it’s Glory”?

“With-held deductions, salary arrears. lamented the staff” Since the company failed to remit key deductions from employees check, e.g. (PAYE) KRA among others, its proving to be very difficult to get employment elsewhere.

In June this year, there was a publication notice which was served to all staff members that the media house announced a layoff of more than 300 employees. Marion Muthoga,  CEO of the media group ,who joined the company this year has failed to address the burning issue. As of now, it’s clear that the media house which was once, shinning it’s brightest light could be deeming it’s Glory.
