There’s been a Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda , keeping Kenya on high alert.

The Ministry of Health has issued a high alert in response to the outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in Rwanda.
Although there have been no reported cases in Kenya, authorities are taking precautions due to close travel links between the two countries.

Marburg virus is highly contagious and fatal, with an 88% mortality rate..Symptoms include high fever, headache, weakness and bleeding from multiple sites.

In a statement, the minister confirmed that surveillance has been increased at all points of entry into Kenya and urged people to be vigilant.

To avoid close contact with infected or suspected people, see a doctor if symptoms similar to Marburg appear, and avoid sharing personal items such as towels, dishes or clothes.

The Ministry also advised people to wear protective equipment when caring for a person suspected of MVD, wash their hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, and visiting affected areas.

Travelers are advised to check their travel health advisories and stay up-to-date with the latest health information.

Residents are advised to report unusual fevers, bleeding and other symptoms, especially if they have been in areas affected by Marburg virus infection.
