TikTok deleted over 60,000 Kenyan accounts.

TikTok revealed on Wednesday, November 13, its decision to ban more than 60,000 Kenyan accounts and eliminate approximately 360,000 videos from its platform during the second quarter of the year.

During the release of its Quarter 2, 2024 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, the video-sharing platform shared that  this action is in line with its continuous endeavors to promote a secure and enjoyable user interaction.

In its comprehensive report, TikTok revealed that more than 360,000 videos were taken down from its platform in Kenya, accounting for only 0. 3 percent of the total videos shared in the country during the latest reporting period.

According to key findings, an overwhelming 99. 1 percent of the deleted videos were removed proactively,  even before users had a chance to report them, with 95 percent of these videos being taken down within just 24 hours.

Around the same time, 60,465 accounts were prohibited due to breaching TikTok’s Community Guidelines, while an additional 57,262 accounts were taken down for suspected underage users.

One of the potential reasons for an account or video being removed from TikTok is if a user posts content displaying disordered eating behaviors or people engaging in risky behaviors.

Additional factors include accounts or videos showcasing nudity or inappropriate  body exposure, content that is shocking or graphic, videos portraying individuals involved in gambling, as well as content promoting drug and substance use.

TikTok disclosed that it has onboarded over 40,000 trust and safety experts  equipped with cutting-edge technology to uphold and implement the platform’s strong community guidelines, terms of service, and advertising policies.

TikTok, in their announcement, pledged to keep investing in cutting-edge technologies to improve content comprehension and evaluate possible risks. TikTok has revealed that with these innovations, the platform is now  able to identify and eliminate detrimental content even before it is seen by viewers.

As per the well-known social media platform, in June of this year, they took down more than 178 million videos worldwide, of which 144 million were removed automatically.

The technical advancements make it possible to decrease the amount of content that human moderators have to review, which helps reduce their exposure to harmful  material. TikTok has proudly shared that its proactive detection rate now stands at an impressive 98. 2% worldwide, making it more effective than ever in tackling harmful content before users are exposed to it.

TikTok is dedicated to utilizing advanced moderation technologies to ensure transparency and platform safety, prioritizing the protection of its diverse user community in Kenya and  worldwide.
